The courier whose shipment status page changes mysteriously and retroactively in the face of an upcoming legal dispute

I wonder who authorizes the tampering of shipment status pages retroactively, especially when there is an upcoming police matter regarding theft.
I had used the services of GATI ltd to transport a motorcycle and some packed luggage from Himachal Pradesh (India) to Mumbai, India. As the delivery was grossly delayed due to a portion of the consignment being left behind at an intermediate location, with no clear information being offered by the customer service dept of the company, as to how and why, I became suspicious and stored the current shipment status page, on 16/10/10. On receipt of the consignment, I realized that the packaging of one of the pieces of luggage had changed, and some electronic goods etc inside had been pilfered.
The missing goods included Nikon Coolpix 4800 camera, it’s charger, a rechargeable battery charger, several new and old batteries, 5 SD cards including a new 4GB class 6 card, several cables, connectors and the like
GATI ltd has taken pains not to contact me after that even after being informed of the grossly delayed delivery and the theft. However, somebody within the company has deleted an entry made on the shipment status page, retroactively, after the shipment was delivered. There is an entry (“exception is SHORT”) dated 15/10/10. MAGIC! the incriminatory entry dated 15/10/10, indicating that here was some problem at their end has disappeared.
Pilferage in transit, though entirely unwelcome (and the liability of the transporter) is one thing.

Gati had not made any official mention of the theft either, in spite of repacking the opened luggage. Essentially, they have tried to cover up the fact that the specific parcel was opened unauthorizedly, whereas they should have made a police complaint there itself on suspicion + made me aware of the issue.
